On 8 November, Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO, CEO of Catholic Social Services Australia, delivered the 2017 Rerum Novarum Oration for the Archdiocese of Melbourne’s Office for Justice and Peace. He spoke about the Harvester case of 1907, a landmark Australian labour law decision of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration, and its significance to the work situation in Australia today. On 17 October the Vice-Chancellor and President of Australian Catholic University hosted the inaugural PM Glynn Lecture on Religion, Law and Public Life in Adelaide. The lecture was delivered by the Honourable Dyson Heydon AC QC on the topic Religious ‘toleration’ in modern Australia: the tyranny of relativism. The Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide supported the event which was attended by some 70 people.
